Our History In 1992, Russ Ellis, N8MWK decided to try and organize a club in the area for hams that enjoyed dxing, contests, and operating and that would like to have a exam session regularly. At that time other area clubs didn't offer testing and everyone had to go long distances to take exams. Russ contacted many of the area Hams and set up S.C.A.R.F.'s first meeting in early 1993 at the Russell building in Millfield. We had about 18 people show up and we discussed becoming an entity of Hocking College. Pete Morris KI8CA, Allan Withem, Howard Fox and Russ were the first 4 members. Russ and Howard spent lots of time at Hocking College working with them until they finally accepted S.C.A.R.F. as an official Hocking College club. We became an official club on April 1993 and also became an official ARRL affiliated club on April 3, 1993. S.C.A.R.F. stayed a Hocking College club until 2005 when the members decided to become independent. S.C.A.R.F. is still an ARRL club. At one time S.C.A.R.F. had 33 members I think around 1995 and was the largest club in this area. We placed first in (2) of the June VHF contests the club operated in from Bob Coopers Qth in Glouster and (1) more first place was taken in 2001 at the High Point location. S.C.A.R.F. was very active and doing well until 2003-2004 when we had 4 very active members pass away, Harry Volmer, Bob Harris, Frank Dunlevy, and Frank Stufflebeam. This really set the club back. As with Amateur radio as a whole membership started to decline and getting members to replace our fallen ones was really hard to do and many members didn't participate in many of the clubs events they just stayed paid up and supported the club with their dues each year. Because of the loss of many of our members, we are gladly and actively seeking new members. If you are interested, please go to our "Join Our Club!" page for more information and an application.
